Women and men are separated in many ways. I think that when it comes to sports there should be no separation. I think women should be able to compete with men. One thing in particular, the NFR. The NFR is the Nationals Finals Rodeo. You won't see a girl in any event except Barrel racing. Many events in the NFR such as Tie Down Roping, Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, and Bulldogging commonly known as Steer Wrestling require lots of strength. Steer Wrestling requires the rider to jump off the horse at a full run and wrestle the running cow until all 4 feet of the cow are not touching the ground. Events like this need extreme physical strength and endurance. Events such as these are man dominated events, just because of the pure strength men have over women.
Team roping on the other hand only requires 2 riders to rope the cow on the horns and on the 2 hind feet. This event requires much less physical ability. Women are allowed to do this event in Junior rodeos and lower class rodeos but not the pros. I think this is something that should be changed. "Roping isn't a boys sport anyone can do it" says Amy Donaldson from Dessert News. If women can compete at a lower level and do well, why shouldn't they be able to compete in the pros if you get all the points to be able to go to the NFR. Practice makes perfect and anyone can practice, any gender. "Quality practice means going out in the right frame of mind'', says Lara Dee Guy from APHA. Anyone can have dedication do something as long as you have a drive to succeed. I have been practicing roping for a few months and i can easily do it and i get a little flustered when i hear women aren't allowed to reach as far as they can go like men can in rodeo. Hopefully in the future people will come together and try to fix this problem. Both men and women should be able to reach there full potentials in anything, including sports.

Are women not allowed to rope in the NFR? If so, I'm surprised that they aren't, considering there are plenty of women, for example, that could flank a calf just as well as a man. Also, bulldogging is not all raw strength, it does require technique, and it is more likely that experienced bulldoggers will have more developed technique, allowing them to more easily finish the steer. So, why are women not able to compete with men? Even if the man is stronger than the woman in a certain case, if their level of technique is equal, the man may not necessarily be able to finish the steer more quickly.

ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you! Women are allowed to fight in the UFC (which is mostly male dominant), but not rope a calf in the NFR? Roping is mostly skill and doesn't require as much physical strength such as bulldogging, bronc riding and bull riding. But if women have enough strength and technique to participate in these events they should be allowed to. Maybe in the more strength dominant events in the NFR they could have just women compete against each other like they do in the UFC? On the other hand, they should not discriminate against the men wanting to compete in barrel racing and performance shows. Everyone should be able to participate in whatever event they want without the fear of discrimination against them for being to "feminine" or "masculine".
